History of Gillis Grier House

The Gillis Grier House was originally constructed in 1887 by James Cannon, a prominent Salisbury figure who played a key role in rebuilding the city after the devastating fire of 1886 left much of the area in ruins.

Designed in the Queen Anne style, the home was later sold in 1897 to the Gillis family for $7,000, well above the average home price of approximately $2,000 at the time. The Gillis family, owners of a successful wholesale grocery business located just a short walk away in downtown Salisbury, made the house their home and raised their children within its walls.

One of their daughters, Mamie Gillis, continued this legacy. After marrying Fred Grier Jr., a well-known fire marshal, the union gave rise to the now-familiar Gillis Grier name. The home remained in the family for generations, eventually passing to one of their daughters, who lived there until 1975, when the property was sold, marking the end of nearly eight decades of family ownership.

Thanks to its exceptional preservation, the Gillis Grier House is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
